Why Did(nt) You Leave?
About
Why Did(n’t) You Leave is a design research project that reframes how the sustainable reuse of existing buildings can create safe spaces for survivors of domestic abuse and their families. The project proposes the adaptive transformation of a former factory on Gillender Street, London, into a network of transitional housing, safe educational spaces for young people, support services, a gallery, and a public café. Through spatial design, this project seeks to inspire safety, empowerment, and community connection while advocating for the adaptive reuse of urban spaces to address the lack of provision for families fleeing domestic violence and coercive control. It addresses systemic inequity within the built environment.
